Appropriate preservation of essential oils

- Most of the essential oils can be preserved to last several years. Some even improve with age, as in the case of good wines. Citric oils, carrier oils with fatty oils and the hydrosols have a more limited duration and they are not generally preserved more than one or two years. When "they expire" you will immediately notice a change in the scent.

- The fatty oils are preserved to last longer if they are blended with essential oils, because these act as preserving agents.

- Please: don't throw rancid oils down the drain, but in a container for biological waste.

- The essential oils as well as the fatty oils are very light and temperature sensitive, so it is important to keep them in dark opaque bottles and at a temperature between 15 and 22 ºC or between 59° and 71°F. Citric oils will preserve better in the refrigerator.

- Bottles with a color that protect it from light are used, light brown, blue, violet or opaque white with quantities starting from 5 ml. They need to have a screw on top and you should be able to get them at a pharmacy, cosmetic or natural product stores.

- The essential oils are very volatile, so for that reason you shouldn’t leave the bottles open for a long time, and after their use it will be necessary to make sure that they are tightly closed.
